I would like to welcome each and every one of my students and their

parents. I am looking forward to working with you this year. We will be covering a

lot of information this year in preparation for SOL’S.

The following explanations will describe what we will cover in each

       subject area.

MATH:  We will cover Unit 1: Routines, Review, and Assessment. This

covers number patterns, counting by 10’s and 100’s, place-value, telling time,

counting money, equivalent names for numbers, and knowing basic addition facts.

We will also cover Unit 2: Adding and Subtracting Whole Numbers. This includes

Fact Families, Number Extensions, “What’s My Rules?”, Number Stories,

Addition and Subtraction Algorithms, and regular addition using three or more

       addends.

LANGUAGE ARTS:  We will cover Unit 1: Finding My Place. There are

several skills covered such as sequence, drawing conclusions, author’s purpose,

cause and effect, and character. It is encouraged that you have your child read

everyday for at least 15 minutes. We will also concentrate on grammar, phonics,

word study, and punctuation skills so that we will begin writing well constructed

       paragraphs.

SCIENCE: In science we skip around in the text book. We will begin with

Unit F, Chapter 11 which is on Matter. There are interesting activities that are

completed in each chapter. We will then proceed to Unit E, Chapter 10 on Work

and Machines which covers simple machines. A project will be required with this

       chapter.

SOCIAL STUDIES: In social studies we begin the year with introductory

lessons on the four strands of social studies, History, Geography, Economics, and

Civics. We will then proceed to our text book and begin studying about Ancient

Greece, Ancient Rome, and Ancient Mali.

I am available for conferences at your convenience. You may write

notes in your child’s planner whenever necessary, send a note on paper with your

child, or email me. I will respond. I wish to communicate with you so that together

we can help your child succeed. There will also be Weekly Grams coming home for

your signature with your child’s work from the previous week. Please feel free to

       contact me at any time.
