I hope each one of you is as excited about this school year as I am.  A lot is expected of Fifth graders at Kempsville Elementary School, but I know each one of you is up to the responsibility.

There will not be a Spelling Test this week, due to the short three day week.

In math we just completed Unit 2 from the fifth grade Math text.  I was very impressed with how well each of you did with the Lattice Multiplication and the Partial-Product Multiplication.  We will begin Unit 3 on Wednesday.  The following concepts will be introduced in this unit:

Lesson 3.1

o      To explore data collection, organization, and interpretation

o      Read and write large whole numbers

Lesson 3.2

o      To provide experiences with interpreting data

o      Add and Subtract whole numbers and decimal

Lesson 3.3

o      To relate circles and relationships among angles to the degree measures of angles

o      Identify angle measure using the relationships between circles and polygons

Lesson 3.4

o      To review types of angles, geometric figures, and the use of the Geometry Template to measure and draw angles

o      Understand how to use full-circle and Half-circle protractors

Lesson 3.5

o      To review compass skills and explore angles formed by intersecting lines

o      Solve extended multiplication facts mentally

Lesson 3.6

o      To explore triangle types and introduce methods for copying triangles

o      Compare decimals

Lesson 3.7

o      To explore geometric properties of polygons

o      Recognize the relationship between sides and angles in polygons

Lesson 3.8

o      To explore a side and angle relationship in regular tessellations

o      Draw, Estimate, and Measure Angles

Lesson 9

o      To develop an approach for finding the angle measurement sum for a polygon

o      Understand angle measures and relationships in polygons

Lesson 10

o      To review polygon attributes and vocabulary using the Geometry Template

o      Make magnitude estimates for division with large numbers.
