Ways Busy Parents Can Help Children Succeed On SOL
Tests
Standards of Learning (SOL) tests are common
today in grades 3-5. These tests are used to measure student achievement and to
tell schools which skills students need to improve as well as to evaluate our
school’s performance. And with data gathered from these tests, your child’s school
can design lessons to raise your child’s academic performance.
You
can boost your child’s performance on the SOL tests. You can help your child
feel confident, well-prepared, and ready to succeed on these important tests.
v Make sure your child is in school everyday.
v Have your child ready the night before so
he/she can get to school on time. (8:25-3:00)
v Schedule medical appointments
after school.
v Eat a healthy breakfast each morning. Get the brain going!
v Stick to a regular bedtime.
v Encourage your child to exercise every day.
v Remind your child that the SOL test is for
them to SHOW OFF LEARNING!
Breathe…Breathe…Breathe
How
to relax test-stressed kids is becoming an ever increasing issue within
schools. On state testing days, when the stress level starts to rise, it would
not be completely shocking to have a child in tears or fall to pieces. So,
let’s clean up, calm down, and consider how to ease the stress.
Quiet the mind. Let it wander to a peaceful
place, maybe the beach or the mountains
Breathe deeply. Close your eyes, inhale, hold
and release.
Take off your shoes and relax.
Stretch their limbs,
shake their fingers, and other physical stretches.
Focus on what you know and show us what you
need to know.

Highly Responsible Students
Responsible
students grow up to be responsible adults. These students don’t have any one
secret for their success… but they do practice some habits that help them. Experts
say that if we repeat an action every day for just 21 days, it is likely to
become automatic. So for the next 21 days, encourage your child to act on these
7 habits of responsible students. Soon your child will be responsible without
really thinking.
1. Set goals to keep focused on the future.
2. Plan time to meet all
obligations. If you
fail to plan, you plan to fail.
3. Study every day, one step at a
time, a little each day.
4. Take notes in class and review them daily.
5. Have supplies/tools available.
6. Keep commitments to others and to self. Do
assignments well and on time.
7. Get ready ahead of time. Being late (or
early) is a choice to be made.
Contact your
school counselor for any ideas and/or suggestions to help your child succeed in
school.
